Tai Chi for Sports

Do you know Tai Chi? Tai Chi is awesome as a sports training tool because its goal is to cultivate balance, calm and power. Those are three things one needs to excel in any physical activity. During Tai Chi practice you learn about the lower dan tien, which is an energy center located just below the navel. This is a first step in achieving a pure equilibrium and also form here you go onto balancing activities while standing, sitting and then hopping onto unstable and table surfaces to maintain that equilibrium. Then comes the balance board, which is nothing but a small wooden surface on top of the half of a ball. These are also known as wobble boards. Once you get atop these balance boards then you will need all your strength to do exercise on this board. By doing a variety of exercises you can actually correct your posture and also it improves the fitness of the lower region.

The other balance related exercises are involves the use of stability ball. This stability ball can be used to target your abdomen area. Balance exercises actually strengthen your knee flexors and extensors. Another type of balancing exercises can be improved using the ski machine which is simulation machine to simulate the actual ski experience. You can target your outer and inner thighs as well as calf muscles by doing the ski machine exercises. So get your hands on the balancing equipment and try to get fit using those. What Causes A Headache?

This is another nice topic that I want to share with you. Considering the variety of headaches and sufferers it should not come as any surprise that the causes of headaches are equally diverse. There are countless possible causes for headaches including underlying medical problems like the fortunately rare instances of cerebral aneurysms and brain tumors. However the most commonly experienced headaches have generally common causes.

In a lot of instances simple eyestrain such as that seen when working too long at the computer can result in a headache. At other times, ordinary infected sinuses caused by an allergy or head cold can be the culprit. Taking certain prescription medicines can also give you a headache.

Though the precise cause is not always known, narrowing of the blood vessels is thought to be the culprit in many cases. However blood vessels are able to dilate as well as contract and when they do so migraines and cluster headaches can result. Contemporary research suggests that there are also other much more important factors at play when it comes to migraine headaches.

Tension or more accurately tension-type headaches can result from other sources like tension in the muscles of the neck, shoulder and even the jaw. People who have experienced TMJ disorder which is a condition resulting from tension of the temporomandibular joint in which the jaw tightens against the skull will be all too familiar with this.

In more serious cases headaches will arise out of some underlying disease and these are often referred to as 'secondary headaches'. The catalogue of underlying conditions that can cause headaches is lengthy and will include everything from scarlet fever to irritable bowel syndrome.

Often environmental factors also play an important role. Carbon monoxide poisoning such as that resulting from the gas produced by many water heaters or a car exhaust can result in severe headaches and in fact headaches are one of the main symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. Other causes include allergies, lead poisoning and food poisoning.

Even where food is not actually toxic as would be the case where food is contaminated with a bacterial infection some people will be sensitive to compounds which will not affect the general population. Such common foods as chocolate and cheese can cause headaches in some people as will red wine, caffeine and some preservatives.

About Carbohydrates

When planning nutrition, there are seven components that the human body needs in order to maintain health. These include carbohydrates, proteins, fats/oils, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and water. And today we will talk about carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates (or carbs for short) are getting a lot of bad press these days, especially since the popularization of the Atkins Diet and other similar diets. Simply put though, your body NEEDS carbs in order to function.

Something to keep in mind is that there are two kinds of carbohydrates. The first is simple sugars. These are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream because they are in a chemical form that the body can readily use. Typically you will feel a burst of energy when consuming simple sugars, but many people will also feel a "crash" soon afterwards because just as the simple sugars are easy to assimilate, they are quickly used up and then nothing remains to continue to nourish the body. There is too much difference between the available energy when the sugars are entering the bloodstream and the period soon after when they are gone. This can cause headaches, tiredness and fatigue, irritability, and other results that you may recognize, while other problems are building inside your body that you don't feel.

In order to process sugar, the body needs insulin. When taking in simple sugars, the body demands insulin (which is made by the pancreas) quickly, because the sugar is ready to use NOW. If you continually eat simple sugars, the pancreas can become stressed with all the stop-start demands for quick insulin production. This is one of the dietary factors that can lead to diabetes, in which the pancreas is no longer able to produce sufficient insulin to process sugars.

Another problem is that insulin, which has come to be known as the "fat storage hormone," basically helps to instruct your body that the sugar being processed needs to be stored for future energy, and over time, will be much more likely to lead to obesity than if the same calories had been consumed in another form.

The second type of carbs are complex carbohydrates. These are the ones found in whole grains, vegetables, etc. The advantage with complex carbohydrates is that their complex structure means that it takes the body longer to process them to make them available for energy, so the need for insulin to process these sugars is a slow, steady process that doesn't place the demands on the pancreas for immediate insulin that simple sugars do. Thus the pancreas is not stressed, the insulin doesn't tell the body that the sugars are best converted to fat, and the body receives a slow, consistent dose of energy over time, avoiding those "crash" headaches, fatigue, etc.

The intake of simple sugars should be limited. Instead, you should seek out complex carbs for as much of your energy calories as possible.

Menopause symptoms and Memory Loss

In the latest study that exonerates menopause as a cause of impairing the ability to recall, Taiwanese researchers compared the memory of hundreds of women before they had any menopausal symptoms to their memory as they entered menopause.

They found the women who were going through the menopausal process scored as well or nearly as well on five different cognitive function tests. Results of the study are to be presented Oct. 4 at the American Neurological Association annual meeting in Toronto.

"When women go into perimenopause, they don't need to worry about cognitive decline," said Dr. Jong-Ling Fuh, an attending physician at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and an associate professor of Yang-Ming University School of Medicine.

The researchers said the myth of memory loss during menopause is a perception some women have because as they went through menopause, they felt their memory wasn't as sharp as it had been before. Studies suggesting that hormone replacement therapy might protect against dementia strengthened that belief. However, a large study later found that in older women, hormone replacement therapy not only didn't help protect women from dementia, but could actually increase the risk.

To try to answer the question of whether menopause did have any effect on memory, Fuh and her colleagues studied nearly 700 premenopausal women living on a group of rural islands between Taiwan and China. The Taiwanese government restricted access to these islands until the 1990s, so the authors report that the study's population was nearly homogeneous, which would help rule out other potentially causative factors of memory loss.

The women were between the ages of 40 and 54. None of them had had a hysterectomy, and none took hormone replacement therapy during the study.

All took five cognitive tests designed to assess their memory and cognitive skills at the start of the study, and then again 18 months later.

During the study period, 23 percent of the women began to have symptoms of menopause.

The researchers then compared the memory of the women who had entered menopause to those who had not, and found very little difference. In four of the five tests, there were no statistically significant differences in the two groups of women.

Only on one test was the difference statistically significant, and that difference, said Fuh, was very slight. This test was designed to assess verbal memory and involved showing the women 70 nonsensical figures. Some of the figures were repeated during the test, while most were not. The women were asked whether they had seen the figure earlier.

"For women, menopause does not mean you'll develop memory loss," said Dr. Raina Ernstoff, an attending neurologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. As you're going through perimenopause and experiencing symptoms like hot flashes, she said, you may feel lousy and have trouble sleeping, which might temporarily affect your cognitive skills.

"I don't think declining estrogen levels are what causes memory loss," said Dr. Steven Goldstein, an obstetrician/gynecologist at New York University Medical Center in New York City. "It's not like your memory is bopping along, doing fine and then takes this big dive during menopause, like bone density can."

Both Ernstoff and Goldstein said they weren't aware of many women who believed that menopause might cause significant memory loss. They also both felt that results from this group of women who were so homogeneous might not apply to different groups of women, such as those living in more industrialized society. And they both said that other factors that weren't studied could play a role in memory loss, such as hypertension, which can contribute to vascular dementia.

Ernstoff also pointed out that the education backgrounds can play a large role in memory loss. Fuh acknowledged the researchers did attempt to control the data for educational differences.
